Development

The Moussa Formula was developed by Mr. George Moussa, a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in Vitreoretinal and Cataract surgery.

Methodology

The Moussa Formula is a thick-lens inspired, theoretical and data-driven approach refined through symbolic regression. It operates as a geometric optics operator yielding a complex mathematical formula, rather than functioning as a black-box model.

Clinical Integration

To align with industry standards and ensure ease of use in current clinical environments, the formula utilises a single optimisable A-constant value per lens model. A primary focus of its development was to reduce errors observed at the extremes of ocular dimensions, ensuring robust performance across short, medium, and long eyes.

Validation

The formula is undergoing strict peer review to validate its efficacy and this section will be updated as more literature comes in. Researchers are welcome to use the research suite to see its performance on their data or contact me for any help analysing the Moussa formula.

Change Log

v1.1 - 12.06.2026

  • A-Constant Alignment: Significant updates to the Moussa Formula A-constant derivation to more align with SRK/T. This ensures greater compatibility with established IOLCon values.

Warning: This fundamental alignment may significantly alter refractive outcome calculations compared to earlier versions of the formula. If you require access to previous calculation sets for ongoing research purposes, please contact me.
  • Research Suite: Major upgrades to the advanced statistical analysis suite, including enhanced cluster-robust multiple testing and intelligent computational routing.

Intellectual Property

The Moussa Formula was developed by Mr. George Moussa, who retains all intellectual property rights.

Disclaimer: This online calculator provides an interface to apply the formula for individual patient calculations and research purposes. Users should always exercise clinical judgment and cross-reference results with established methods when making decisions for patient care.
